SPORTS MASSAGE

Sports Massage treatment can be used to aid recovery from injury or an event or as part of a long term training programme. It is not just for elite athletes but the average club player as well the gardener.

Sports massage is a form of soft tissue massage which focuses on muscle systems used in athletic activites and also in such activities as gardening.

It can combine Swedish and No Hands style massage with trigger point compression and electro-neuromuscular techniques to reduce soreness and help enhance power, endurance and flexibility.

In ancient Greece athletes used massage before and after competing while the Romans recognised the benefits for injured gladiators.

In 1900 the Finish School of Massage developed a system of Sports Massage, and in 1924 it first came to the public attention when Paavo Nurmi won 5 Gold Medals at the Olympic Games in Paris in ONE day, with only a 30 minute break between some events including the 1.5k and 5k races. Nurmi credits sprots Massage treatment as one of the important components of his training.

Through the 1950s and 1960s the Russians and East Germans developed Sprots Massage techniques which have now become mainstream.

As science develops and professional athletes and their trainers push the boundaries of human performance and recovery, the benefits flows down in various sports. Now the typical club golfer and Sunday morning footballer can imporve their performance by using a Sport Massage therapist.

Now almost every major sports team has its own physiotherapist; many elite athletes use sports massage to help them, and it is now affordable and will benefit your normal club athlete from lower back pain with golfers, shoulder problems with tennis players or rehabilitation from injury. Pre- and post-event as well as preventative treatments help reduce your injury risk no matter at what level you compete.

Natasha deals mainly with cyclists, runners and gym enthusiasts although she also works with Army personnel and has worked with non-professional rugby players.

Sports massage should be used as part of your regular on-going training.

Sports massage can also benefit gardeners, walkers and anyone undergoing a fitness regime.

What happens during a treatment?

The treatment will be suitable for your body, your sports and any problems that need to be addressed.

Treatment may also involve manual manipulation of your muscles and limbs, as well as the use of electrical stimuli to rejuvenate muscles or even the use of ultrasound equipment.

Due to the nature of deep muscle tissue manipulation, it can be uncomfortable at first, but your body will respond as muscle stiffness reduced and flexibility increases.

Psychological benefits can be hugh with deep muscle tissue massage, such as an increase in self-esteem and self perception.

After treatment care:

To gain maximum benefit from the treatment it is best if you try to rest as this helps your body's natural healing process. Caffine can have a stimulating effect, so tea, coffee and cola should be avoilded if possible, to help you to relax.

Drink plenty of water or herbal teas over the following few days as this helps flush away toxins. Try to avoid alcohol and tobacco for at least 24 hours.

Natasha may also prescribe exercises to help the rehabilitation process as well as advising on exercises which should be avoided for a period of time.

Potential benefits and effects of a sports massage:

*     Faster recovery from micro damage and trauma in workouts.

*     Increased flexibility and range of motion.

*    Ease from Muscular pain.

*     Relief from fatigue.

*     Reduced injury healing time.

*     Improved circulation.
