INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE

Brief History of Indian Head Massage:

What exactly is an Indian Head and Shoulder Massage? An Indian Head Massage is a treatment that works specifically on the area surrounding the head, scalp, face, neck and extending to the shoulders and upper back and also covers some Chakra work to the face and head.

Indian Head Masssage has been used in Asia for over 5,000 years. Indian women have appreciated the benefits of Indian Head Massage, a treatment which has come from the Ayurveda, an ancient method involving natural therapies, taking account of mind, body and spirit. The Hindi word for head massage is Champi and aspects of the treatment have a long tradition in Indian families. Mothers would stroke their daughter's hair to promote its growth and health. It is also a great treatment for stress relief.

As cultures moved around the world they took their traditions with them. There are several stories of who brought Indian Head Massage to Britain but it started to appear around the 1970s and developed in popularity during the 1980s.

Indian Head Massage as taught and practiced in the West is a mixture of traditional Indian and western massage techniques.

What happens during a treatment?

Although Natasha uses oils based upon the seasons, such as Sesame and Coconut during the summer; Mustard and Olive oils are used during the winter months as these oils are especially known for their warming effects. Upon request some traditional oil blends will be used such as Brahmi oil which is an exotic combination of herbs and coconut oil which it is said can encourage long, glossy hair.

Oils are optional and if treatment is perfered without oils then please let Natasha know at the start of the consultation process.

Alot of people like to have an Indian Head Massage as a introductory treatment to the clinic as no removal of clothing is necessary and the client can decide whether to sit in a chair or lie on the couch. This is predominantly a head, nek and face massage although the upper back and top of the shoulders are also worked.

After the treatment:

To gain maximum benefit from the treatment it is best if you try to rest as this helps your body's natural healing process. Caffine can have a stimulating effect, so tea, coffee and cola should be avoilded if possible, to help you to relax.

Drink plenty of water or herbal teas over the following few days as this helps flush away toxins. Try to avoid alcohol and tobacco for at least 24 hours.
